I took my purse from my dresser, slung it over my shoulder, and was about to turn back when I saw the envelope, still sitting in the open drawer. John’s instructions for my third trial. I picked the envelope up, fingered the edge thoughtfully, then slipped it into my purse and turned back to Frank.
He’d been watching me. I felt my face flush. “My jacket,” he said simply. “I’m curious about the contents of that letter too, but there other things to discuss first.” I nodded, and fetched it from the closet for him.
We waited for the elevator to come, neither of us speaking.
“Can I ask a favor, Frank?” I found myself saying nervously.
“Of course,” he replied.
“Do you really consider me female now?” I asked.
